The book of Ruth begins with a woman, Naomi, at the end of a 10-year journey in search of greener grass, reflecting on the fact that life hasn’t turned out to be all that she thought it would be.  Though she had high hopes at the beginning of her journey, she’s met with the bitter reality of life that brings her to the point where she begins to doubt the goodness of God towards her.  The moment she returns, however, God’s providence is already at work behind the scenes and we see him through the rest of the book bringing fullness out of the emptiness they’ve experienced over the past 10 years.
